The tree care industry is among the most hazardous professions. We are also one of the top five industries that OSHA targeted in their strategic plan because of our industry's poor safety record.
Falls, electricutions, struck-by's and other potentially fatal accidents can occur when a tree care worker knowingly or unknowingly commits an unsafe act; or because he was distracted or not paying attention to the surroundings.
Over the years, the industry has participated in standards development – both voluntary and through government regulation – to identify hazards and improve safety. We have shared our collective knowledge about safety developments and held numerous workshops and seminars to encourage arborists to embrace best management practices. Together with government, we worked to develop tools to help companies with safety training.
Despite individual successes with safety, the industry's collective effort to curb accident rates has made only marginal headway.
TCIA and TCIAF offer a wide array of products intended to enhance worker safety and increase professionalism and competency of tree care workers. We also promote safety and competency by offering educational seminars and workshops around the country.
